The Liberation War Museum opened in 1996 in a rented house at Segunbagicha, founded by a group of trustees who wanted the evidence of 1971 collected and kept by citizens rather than the state. It moved into its own building at Agargaon in 2017, paid for largely by public donations.
The galleries run in order: the land and its people, the language movement and the years of political struggle, the crackdown of March 1971, the genocide, the nine months of war, and victory on 16 December. Much of what is on display — letters, clothes, photographs, personal effects — was donated by the families of those who died.
The museum also runs an archive and an oral-history programme, and keeps a second site at Jalladkhana in Mirpur, a killing field turned memorial.
Tickets can be bought at the gate or online. Hours shorten during Ramadan.
