The National Zoo opened at Mirpur on 23 June 1974 and spreads over 186 acres. As of 2024 it kept about 2,150 animals of 191 species: Royal Bengal tigers and lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, hippos, chimpanzees, estuarine crocodiles, and more than 1,500 birds.
For younger children there is a play park inside the grounds with swings, slides, a merry-go-round and a family train, and the zoo museum screens short documentaries introducing the animals. Two restaurants run by the Parjatan Corporation, separate prayer rooms, an information desk at the gate and wheelchairs for elderly and disabled visitors make a full day there manageable.
The zoo is run by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
