BITAC began in 1962 as the Pakistan Industrial Technical Assistance Center, formed by merging an industrial research centre with a productivity service, and took its present name in 1972. A 2019 act made it a statutory body under the Ministry of Industries. It makes and repairs machine parts that would otherwise be imported, and does research and development, but it is best known for training.
Since 1964 it has run regular, hands-on courses for graduates of schools, polytechnics and universities and for people already working in factories: machine shop practice, welding, electrical maintenance, foundry practice and pattern making, automobile and machine maintenance, SolidWorks and PLC programming. It also trains polytechnic and TTC teachers, and runs government skills projects alongside its regular courses.
