Chhayanaut was born in 1961. That year Rabindranath Tagore's birth centenary was celebrated in Dhaka in defiance of the Pakistani authorities' disapproval, and afterwards the people behind it — Sufia Kamal, Wahidul Haque and Sanjida Khatun among them — formed an organisation to keep the work going, with Rabindrasangeet at its heart.
It is best known for Borshoboron, the dawn concert under the banyan tree at Ramna that welcomes the Bangla new year every Pohela Boishakh. Through the rest of the year it holds seasonal festivals, Rabindra and Nazrul festivals, a classical music festival, a dance festival, and regular listeners' sessions.
For decades Chhayanaut worked out of borrowed school buildings. In 1999 the government allotted it land in Dhanmondi, and its Sangskriti-Bhaban — designed without fee by the architect Bashirul Haq — now holds an auditorium, the Romesh Chandra Dutt memorial hall, a recording centre and lecture rooms, as well as its music school and the Nalanda school.
