Maharaja Gopal Lal Roy rebuilt the Tajhat palace in grand style in the early 20th century; the family's name is said to come from a jewelled crown, a taj. With its white façade, central dome and wide lawns and ponds, it is the finest zamindar house in the north.
From 1984 to 1991 it housed the Rangpur bench of the High Court. The Department of Archaeology protected it in 1995, and in 2005 the Rangpur Museum moved to the upper floor, reached by the famous white-marble staircase. Its rooms hold terracotta of the 10th and 11th centuries, Sanskrit and Arabic manuscripts, sculpture and old weapons.
Photography is not allowed inside the museum.
