The centre was set up in 1977 on 11.39 acres beside the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway, west of the Mashkanda bus stand. Teaching began in 1985 with four trades and about 80 trainees; today around 2,500 people a year train here across 15 trades.
Its core is a two-year SSC (Vocational) programme in nine trades — automotive, general electronics, plumbing and pipe fitting, civil construction, general electrical works, refrigeration and air conditioning, electrical maintenance, general mechanics, and welding and fabrication — with admission every December and January.
Shorter courses include six months of computer office applications or graphic design, sewing-machine operation, four months of motor driving under the SEIP project, a one-month housekeeping course for women going to work in the Middle East, and Japanese, Korean and English.
