The biggest pond in southern Bangladesh, dug in 1780 at Madhabpasha — a tree-lined walk around the water, an island in the middle and winter birds.

About

Durgasagar, locally the Madhabpasha Dighi, was dug in 1780 under Raja Shiva Narayan of Chandradwip, and named after Rani Durgavati. Accounts give its size differently, but the whole site covers about 45 acres, with the water at its heart said to be the largest pond in southern Bangladesh.

A path shaded by old trees runs right round the bank, and a small wooded island sits in the middle. Migratory birds arrive in winter, and a small enclosure keeps deer.

It is about 11 km from Barishal city on the Banaripara road — a quiet afternoon out, and busy with families on holidays.
