Himchari was declared a national park on 15 February 1980 and covers about 1,729 hectares of hill forest between Cox's Bazar and Inani, managed by the Cox's Bazar South Forest Division. It is one of the few places in the country where green hills meet the sea.
Most visitors come for two things: the steps up to the hilltop viewpoint, which looks down the long beach and out over the Bay of Bengal, and the waterfall, which is at its fullest in and just after the monsoon and can be little more than a trickle in the dry season. The forest is home to birds, monkeys and other wildlife, though the busiest stretches near the road are rarely quiet.
It is about 12 km south of the town on Marine Drive, so it pairs naturally with a trip to Inani.
