Jaflong sits in Gowainghat on the border with the Indian state of Meghalaya, about 60 km — two hours by road — from Sylhet city. The Piyain river runs clear out of the hills across a broad bed of rounded stones, and the hills on the far bank rise steeply behind it.
People come for the river and the view: walking the stone banks, taking a boat out on the Piyain, and seeing the Khasi villages, tea gardens and betel-leaf and areca groves around it.
The same stones have made Jaflong a quarrying site, and illegal extraction and hill-cutting have scarred parts of it. The Forest Department's Jaflong Green Park project is replanting reclaimed land. Stay on the Bangladeshi side of the border markers.
