Kuakata lies at the southern tip of Patuakhali district in the Barishal Division. Its beach runs for about 18 km, and because it faces south it gives a clear view of the sun both rising and setting over the Bay of Bengal.
The name comes from the well (kua) dug by Rakhine people who settled here in the late 18th century after leaving Arakan. Their villages and Buddhist temples are still part of a visit, along with the fishing communities, the dried-fish yards and the forested islands reached by boat.
It is a long way from Barishal — plan on a night or two. Mind the currents and the lifeguards' flags.
