The Bangladesh Shishu Academy was set up in 1976 to nurture children's talents and cultural life, and marked its fiftieth year in October 2026. It runs children's libraries in every district; the central one is here.
The central library is made for children. It is air-conditioned and seats 200 at a time, with books from Bangladesh and abroad, a Braille corner for blind and visually impaired readers, low shelves for the under-fives, and an audio-visual room and computer unit for online quizzes and reading.
Anyone can come in and read during opening hours; on Fridays and Saturdays the library is kept for child readers only. Children aged 6 to 18 can become members and borrow two books at a time for 15 days. The Academy also runs training classes for children, swimming among them.
