The Shat Gombuj Masjid was built by Khan Jahan Ali between about 1442 and 1459, when Bagerhat was his city of Khalifatabad. Despite its name it has 81 domes — 77 over the prayer hall in seven rows of eleven, and four on the corner towers — carried on 60 stone pillars. Eleven mihrabs line the western wall.
It is the grandest of the monuments that make up the Historic Mosque City of Bagerhat, listed by UNESCO in 1985, and is still used for prayer. The ticket also covers the Bagerhat Museum on the same site, which tells the story of Khan Jahan Ali's city.
The mosque is about 5 km from Bagerhat town and roughly an hour's drive from Khulna, so it makes a day trip together with Khan Jahan Ali's tomb.
