Begum Rokeya's Birthplace, Pairaband

Pairaband, Mithapukur, Rangpur Every day: Daylight hours

The village home of Begum Rokeya, pioneer of women's education, at Pairaband — the remains of the family house and a memorial centre.

About

Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain (1880–1932), writer and pioneer of education for Muslim women in Bengal, was born at Pairaband in Mithapukur. The remains of the family homestead still stand, and every 9 December, Rokeya Day, the village holds commemorations.

A memorial centre was built beside the house in the late 1990s to preserve her legacy and support women. It was shut down in 2001 and stayed closed for many years; in 2025 it began hosting sewing training for women and art and music classes for girls.

Come for the place itself and what it stands for, not for exhibits. It is in Mithapukur upazila, south of Rangpur city.
