Bangladesh's first Liberation War sculpture, raised at Joydebpur crossing in 1973: a freedom fighter with a rifle and a grenade.

About

Jagrata Chowrangi — "the awakened crossing" — stands at the Joydebpur crossroads in Gazipur. Made in 1973 by the sculptor Abdur Razzaque, a founding teacher of sculpture at the Dhaka art college, it is the first public sculpture of the Liberation War in Bangladesh.

The 18-foot concrete figure of a freedom fighter, rifle in his left hand and grenade in his right, stands on a 24-foot pedestal. Critics count it among the best sculptures in the country, for both its form and its theme.

It is in the middle of a busy crossing, so take care with traffic.
