Mughal river fort of about 1650 across the Shitalakshya from Narayanganj, with a tall gun platform that once watched for pirates.
Sonakanda Fort stands on the east bank of the Shitalakshya in Bandar, opposite Hajiganj. It is believed to have been built around 1650 under Mir Jumla, as part of the ring of three water forts defending Dhaka.
Its square walls, pierced with holes for guns, enclose a large courtyard. On the west side, facing the river, rises a high circular platform where cannon once covered the water against pirate boats. The rectangular gateway still stands.
Cross the river by boat from Narayanganj and see both forts in one trip.
